Dario Verani of Italy took third place in his\n Lac St-Jean debut after passing two swimmers in the final 500 meters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the women\u2019s race, Anna Olasz, 25, of Hungary, posted her best Lac-St-Jean result, second place,\u00a0 despite competing in the 25km event two days earlier at worlds in Korea and arriving in Canada at 3:00 this morning. Caroline Jouisse, 25, of France, took third and made the podium for the first time in her first full year competing in the FINA\/CNSG  Marathon Swim World Series. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"512\" src=\"https:\/\/athleticdb.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/e045551b-5fa7-4d51-8244-8812e4fca145-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-420\" srcset=\"https:\/\/athleticdb.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/e045551b-5fa7-4d51-8244-8812e4fca145-2.jpg 768w, https:\/\/athleticdb.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/e045551b-5fa7-4d51-8244-8812e4fca145-2-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><figcaption>Zitouni and Verani finish 2-3 behind Rasovszky<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Men\u2019s 10km<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The men\u2019s race was faster than the 2018 edition by nearly three \nminutes, but the pack didn\u2019t really string out until the backstretch of \nthe penultimate fifth lap. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Entering the sixth and final loop, Rasovszky made his decisive move \nby skipping the final feed station, accelerating visibly, and leading a \nsix-man breakaway. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He seemed \u201cto gain about two meters on each buoy,\u201d said Zitouni. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, in the last about 700 or 800 meters, the race grew even more \ninteresting when the men caught and passed the women\u2019s race, which had \nbegun about 15 minutes after the men\u2019s start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rasovszky knew the men would overtake the women because he could see the women\u2019s lead boat. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI tried to make some space,\u201d he said. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But he didn\u2019t expect Kenna Smallegange of Canada to separate herself \nfrom the women\u2019s race and try to draft in his wake, hoping to gain \nenough speed to shoot past some of her own competitors. For a moment, \nRasovszky said he worried that another man was on his heels \u201cbut then I \nsaw it was a girl so it was okay. I didn\u2019t have to push it.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp; \n(Smallegange was quickly dropped.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Rasovszky touched the finish pad in 1 hour, 53 minutes, 28.8 \nseconds, it marked his second consecutive victory on the 2019 FINA\/CNSG \nWorld Series tour, following his triumph in Hungary in June. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Runner-up Zitouni and third-place Verani were pleased with their \nresults and both said they had stuck to their pre-race strategies, \nexcept Verani made one mistake. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Rasovszky broke away on the final lap, Verani said, \u201cI needed to\n be behind Kristof, not behind Zatouni. For this reason, I finished \nthird and not second.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Verani said he couldn\u2019t catch Rasovszky because there was too much \ntraffic in the breakaway pack, but he did pass four other swimmers, \nincluding two of them in the final 500 meters: Italy\u2019s Matteo Furlan and\n Marcel Schouten of the Netherlands who placed fourth and fifth, \nrespectively, separated by .01 seconds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Schouten, the 2018 Lac St-Jean winner, was a bit surprised by the performances of the two men flanking Rasovszky on the podium. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know [Zitouni] could get pace like this,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd \nDario as well because usually he can\u2019t follow [Rasovszky]. But he did. \nIt was crazy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"512\" src=\"https:\/\/athleticdb.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/gettyimages-1163112642-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-421\" srcset=\"https:\/\/athleticdb.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/gettyimages-1163112642-2.jpg 768w, https:\/\/athleticdb.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/gettyimages-1163112642-2-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><figcaption>Rachele Bruni finds the fastest line<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Women\u2019s 10km<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The women\u2019s event also came down to the final meters. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI knew it would be a weird race because Anna [Olasz] and Rachele \n[Bruni] just came from the world championships and were probably tired \nfrom travel, so the race would probably be slow from the beginning,\u201d \nsaid third-place finisher Caroline Jouisse. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI tried to make a move in the third lap,&#8221; Jouissse said, &#8220;but knew I\n couldn\u2019t make it work; I didn\u2019t have enough speed to do more. So I did a\n backstroke and let it go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I checked with Rachele when the men were about to catch us. \nBeginning the fifth lap, men\u2019s boat wasn\u2019t far. I tried to stay in \nfront.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the home stretch, however, Bruni couldn\u2019t be touched. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis year, I went easy four laps and the last two a little faster,\u201d \nBruni said after winning in 2 hours 3 minutes, 56.4 seconds. \u201cI wanted \nto stay with the group and not escape until 500 meters from the end. But\n I passed with 600 meters.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anna Olasz finished less than four seconds behind Bruni. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All three women will meet again on August 3 at Lac Megantic, Quebec, \nthe next 10km stop on the FINA\/CNSG Marathon Swimming World Series. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But check this out: to get there, the Hungarians, Olasz and \nRasovszky, are flying all the way back to South Korea tomorrow then home\n to Hungary before returning to Canada in 14 days. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt will take 40 hours or more,\u201d Olasz said of the upciming journey, &#8220;and I spent 24 hours here in Canada.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nonetheless, the silver medalist said, \u201carriving on race day is nice because jet lag hasn\u2019t hit me yet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>FINA\/CNSG 10km Marathon Swimming World Series #5, Lac St-Jean (CAN)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Men<\/strong><br>1.
