Sun Yang\u2019s win in the 200m free came after the \ndisqualification of Danis Rapsys (LTU) who had touched first. Another \nrepetition was in sight in the women\u2019s 1500m free but Katie Ledecky had \nto halt her quest in Gwangju due to illness \u2013 and Simone Quadarella \n(ITA) sat up on the vacant throne.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The evening session just barely kicked off when <g class=\"gr_ gr_8 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Grammar only-ins replaceWithoutSep\" id=\"8\" data-gr-id=\"8\">high<\/g> <g class=\"gr_ gr_9 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"9\" data-gr-id=\"9\">drama  unfolded<\/g> \u2013 as it turned out, the crucial moment came right before <g class=\"gr_ gr_10 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"10\" data-gr-id=\"10\">the  first<\/g> race started. Standing on the starting block, Lithuania\u2019s Danas  Rapsys made an incidental move after the \u201cTake your marks\u201d signal <g class=\"gr_ gr_11 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"11\" data-gr-id=\"11\">which  equalled<\/g> a false start. Rapsys ended up winning the race with a  brilliant swim, ahead of Sun Yang (CHN), but soon after he had hit <g class=\"gr_ gr_12 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"12\" data-gr-id=\"12\">the  wall<\/g>, the \u2018DSQ\u2019 mark appeared next to his name. In fact, his faith <g class=\"gr_ gr_13 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"13\" data-gr-id=\"13\">had  long<\/g> been decided, some 1:45 minutes earlier when he made that <g class=\"gr_ gr_14 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"14\" data-gr-id=\"14\">wicked  move<\/g>. USA\u2019s Katie Ledecky <g class=\"gr_ gr_16 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"16\" data-gr-id=\"16\">was  battling<\/g> with illness and she was on the losing side this time \u2013 <g class=\"gr_ gr_17 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"17\" data-gr-id=\"17\">first  she<\/g> withdrew from the 200m free heats in the morning, then she had <g class=\"gr_ gr_18 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"18\" data-gr-id=\"18\">to  take<\/g> the tough decision to abruptly finish her campaign here. <g class=\"gr_ gr_19 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"19\" data-gr-id=\"19\">Without  her<\/g>, the 1500m free crown was up for grabs and Simone Quadarella <g class=\"gr_ gr_20 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"20\" data-gr-id=\"20\">was  quick<\/g> enough to take it. The Italian added the world title to her  European crown, she became the 4<sup>th<\/sup> best performer of all <g class=\"gr_ gr_21 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"21\" data-gr-id=\"21\">time  and<\/g> Italy\u2019s second winner in this event \u2013 10 years after Alessia  Filippi. It was somewhat stylish that she brought down her predecessor\u2019s  NR set in Rome 2009 (15:40.89 \u2013 though Ledecky\u2019s best ten times <g class=\"gr_ gr_22 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"22\" data-gr-id=\"22\">are  still<\/g> better than this). Germany\u2019s Sarah Kohler was a distant <g class=\"gr_ gr_23 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"23\" data-gr-id=\"23\">second  while<\/g> China\u2019s Wang Jianjiahe grabbed the bronze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"512\" src=\"https:\/\/athleticdb.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/hungary_menvaus-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-461\" srcset=\"https:\/\/athleticdb.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/hungary_menvaus-3.jpg 768w, https:\/\/athleticdb.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/hungary_menvaus-3-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Simone Quadarella and the ever-emotional Italian joy<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The backstrokers\u2019 show <g class=\"gr_ gr_8 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation only-del replaceWithoutSep\" id=\"8\" data-gr-id=\"8\">followed,<\/g> both 100m finals <g class=\"gr_ gr_10 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"10\" data-gr-id=\"10\">saw  thrilling<\/g> contests. Canada\u2019s Kyle Masse, who won in Budapest with a new  WR, turned 4<sup>th<\/sup> at the halfway mark but produced an <g class=\"gr_ gr_11 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"11\" data-gr-id=\"11\">amazing  homecoming<\/g> leg to retain her title. The fight for the minor spoils <g class=\"gr_ gr_12 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"12\" data-gr-id=\"12\">was  absolutely<\/g> tight, three swimmers hit the wall in a span of 0.11sec,  Aussie Minna Atherton just out-touched USA\u2019s Olivia Smoliga and <g class=\"gr_ gr_13 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"13\" data-gr-id=\"13\">the  other<\/g> Canadian Taylor Ruck. Interestingly, Kathleen Baker, who broke  Masse\u2019s WR last August and was silver medallist in 2017, could <g class=\"gr_ gr_14 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"14\" data-gr-id=\"14\">only  finish<\/g> tied 6<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"512\" src=\"https:\/\/athleticdb.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/hungary_menvaus-5.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-463\" srcset=\"https:\/\/athleticdb.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/hungary_menvaus-5.jpg 768w, https:\/\/athleticdb.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/hungary_menvaus-5-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Kyle Masse was sharp again<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The men\u2019s race didn\u2019t bring any less excitements as four \nwere heading towards the wall forming an almost straight line. \nTitle-holder Xu Jiaju of China found the necessary extra gear to touch \nhome first, 0.24sec ahead of Russia\u2019s Evgeny Rylov (who showed his class\n in the shorter distance as he was king of the 200m in recent years). \nTiny margins decided the bronze, three stormed in within 0.05sec, 2015 \nworld champion Mitch Larkin (AUS) was the fastest, ahead of the two US \nOlympic champs (and the medallists in 2017) Ryan Murphy and Matt \nGrevers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another title defence closed the session: USA\u2019s Lilly <g class=\"gr_ gr_5 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"5\" data-gr-id=\"5\">King  led<\/g> all the way in the 100m breast and won with the only sub-1:05  effort of the field, ahead of Yuliya Efimova (RUS). Martina Carraro <g class=\"gr_ gr_6 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"6\" data-gr-id=\"6\">came  third<\/g>, claiming Italy\u2019s <g class=\"gr_ gr_4 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace\" id=\"4\" data-gr-id=\"4\">first ever<\/g> medal in female breaststroke <g class=\"gr_ gr_7 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"7\" data-gr-id=\"7\">events  at<\/g> the Worlds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"512\" src=\"https:\/\/athleticdb.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/hungary_menvaus-6.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-464\" srcset=\"https:\/\/athleticdb.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/hungary_menvaus-6.jpg 768w, https:\/\/athleticdb.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/hungary_menvaus-6-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Lilly King, the undisputed queen of the 100m breaststroke<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the semis, not quite surprisingly, GB\u2019s Adam Peaty <g class=\"gr_ gr_10 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"10\" data-gr-id=\"10\">got  close<\/g> to his WR in the 50m breast (26.11, just 0.16sec shy). The women\u2019s  200m free promises an outstanding battle in the final as five <g class=\"gr_ gr_11 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"11\" data-gr-id=\"11\">swimmers  already<\/g> posted 1:55s, Federica Pellegrini (ITA), winner in 2017 was <g class=\"gr_ gr_12 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"12\" data-gr-id=\"12\">the  fastest<\/g> but Sarah Sjostrom (SWE) also looks for some fine <g class=\"gr_ gr_13 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"13\" data-gr-id=\"13\">consolation  after<\/g> her 100m fly defeat. The last of this elite circle, 5<sup>th<\/sup>  placed Yang Junxuan from China set a new Junior World Record (1:55.99).
